IoT devices can range from extremely constrained, simple and basic single-purpose sensors, to feature-rich smart devices. The common factor for these IoT end-points is the need for connectivity, energy efficiency and reliable security, in order to operate without being compromised.

Mbed Cloud Connect addresses the complexity of reliably connecting high volumes of IoT devices across different networks, by any device vendor, with high availability.

Simple, secure and energy efficient connectivity

Mbed Cloud Connect enables unified connectivity from cloud applications, through Mbed Cloud and on to devices, and provides industry standard end-to-end transport security. It enables IoT device communication via REST APIs to enterprise software and web apps.

Automatic secure device configuration

When your IoT device is first powered on, it automatically connects and configures itself for Mbed Cloud Connect connectivity:

  1. Mbed Cloud Client connects with Bootstrap server and receives Mbed Cloud Connect credentials and URL for secure connectivity.
  2. By using device identity Bootstrap server URL and credentials are defined in Mbed Cloud Client.
  3. Device is ready for data transfer and interaction after first power on.
  4. Client initiated bootstrap according to OMA LWM2M.
  5. Provide credentials for secure connectivity between device and Cloud Connect.

Full control and device management via REST API

Once the device is securely connected via Mbed Cloud Connect, which makes them visible within Mbed Cloud, you can then communicate with them using the REST API.

The REST API is the interface that configures Mbed Cloud and performs device management actions. The API is based on the RESTful paradigm: it exposes a concrete and consistent view of API Resources, with support for CRUDL operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete and List). Requests and responses use HTTP methods (GET, PUT, POST and DELETE). All Mbed Cloud services are accessible via the REST API.

Robust management of constrained devices

Mbed Client Lite is the client profile for constrained devices - specifically, cost-sensitive devices with limited code space and processing capabilities.

These devices typically serve single-function applications with possible multiple sensors/actuators and their data processing and operations capability is limited.

Mbed Client Lite profile offers many benefits:

  • Easy to use, out of the box solution pre-integrated with Mbed OS .
  • Support for protocol stacks specifically designed for constrained nodes CoAP over UDP.
  • Supports channel security (DTLS – PSK).
  • Supports remote secure firmware update.
  • Low footprint, using up to 50% of the constrained device available resources, leaving more space for your application:
    • Memory (RAM) 64 KB (Mbed Client Lite uses 36 KB).
    • Storage: 256-512 KB (Mbed Client Lite, bootloader, Mbed OS and libraries use 220KB).
    • Additional block storage required for firmware update to store the download image.

Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP)

The Mbed Cloud Connect service communicates with devices over CoAP, a specialized communication protocol for use with constrained nodes and constrained networks in the Internet of Things. Through the service, you can communicate with the device, register and deregister devices and subscribe to resources to receive notifications. The service supports both real-time and proxied communication with devices and uses LwM2M resources to organize the communications.

OMA Lightweight M2M (LwM2M)

The OMA’s LwM2M provides device management protocols optimized for constrained IoT devices. With help of these protocols you can manage IoT devices remotely, provision security credentials, and update over-the-air. LwM2M enables interworking between compatible clients and servers, and standards-based protocols are the key preventing vendor lock-ins.
